To register a passkey, your device and account settings must be properly configured.
If you cannot register a passkey, there may be several causes. Below, we explain the main causes and their respective solutions.
① Passkey Storage Location Is Not Enabled
Passkeys are saved on your device, cloud accounts (such as iCloud or Google accounts), or password management apps (password managers).
If these storage locations are not enabled, passkey registration will not be possible.
▶︎ How to fix
- Please check that the passkey storage location is enabled in your device settings.
[If you are using an iPhone]
- Check if Apple’s password app is installed. (Refer to the image below for the app icon.)
-
Verify that iCloud Keychain sync settings are enabled.
Go to "Settings" "Apple Account" "iCloud" "Passwords" and confirm that "Sync This iPhone" is enabled.
* If you use another storage location (such as a password manager app), registration may be possible even if iCloud Keychain is disabled.
* About iCloud Keychain
iCloud Keychain is a feature that securely saves authentication information such as passwords and passkeys linked to your Apple account and shares them among multiple Apple devices logged in with the same account. Enabling it may allow you to use passkeys on other devices like iPhones or Macs signed in with the same Apple account. Since it is managed in the cloud, we recommend properly configuring your Apple account’s security settings (such as password management and two-factor authentication).
② Device Authentication Features Are Disabled or Unavailable
Passkey authentication requires your device’s personal authentication features, such as biometric authentication (fingerprint, facial recognition, etc.) or screen lock authentication (PIN or pattern), to be set up.
▶︎ How to fix
- Confirm that screen lock methods like PIN code, passcode, or pattern are enabled.
- Check that Face ID, fingerprint recognition, or similar biometric features are enabled.
- Verify that there are no sensor malfunctions or device failures on your device.
③ Cloud Account Security Settings Are Insufficient
If you use cloud accounts such as iCloud or Google accounts as passkey storage locations, passkeys may not be usable if security settings (such as two-factor authentication) are disabled.
▶︎ How to fix
- Check that security settings (such as two-factor authentication) for your cloud account are enabled.
④ OS or Browser Is Not Supported
Passkeys can only be used on supported operating systems and browsers.
- iOS: 16 or higher
- Android: 10 or higher
- Windows: 10 or higher
- macOS: 10.15 or higher
▶︎ How to fix
- Update your OS and browser to the latest versions.
- If using a browser, please use our recommended browser, Google Chrome.
⑤ Using a Pre-Release OS Version
Passkey registration may not work properly on beta or developer OS versions.
▶︎ How to fix
- Please use the officially released version of the OS.
